Description

The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) in Potter’s Bar is home to the world’s first stem cell bank.

Stem cells hold considerable potential as treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and motor neurone disease, and the UK Stem Cell Bank is an international resource for scientists, responsible for supplying and storing stem cells for ethically-approved research and clinical trials

Join us at the UK Stem Cell Bank for an evening of talks and discussion where leading scientists will be on hand to discuss their work, the potential of stem cells in curing disease, the ethical and social issues surrounding their work and the work of the Bank.

Speakers include
> Glyn Stacey, head of the UK Stem Cell Bank which has an international profile for the storage and ethical use of stem cell lines.
> Stephen Minger, stem cell scientist at Kings College London. Stephen was the first scientist to create embryonic stem cells in the UK, and the HFEA have recently agreed to consider licence applications for Stephen to create embryos that contain a mixture of human and animal material; so-called ‘cytoplasmic hybrids
> Sarah Franklin, social scientist at the London School of Economics. Sarah’s work looks at the social and ethical issues around stem cell research
