Description

Media training – course programme

At a glance…
The media training course takes scientists with a basic knowledge of the media to a higher level of communication skills, preparing them for radio and television interviews as well as how to approach the written media with news stories and features.

A summary of the course content:
• What is in the print and broadcast media and why?
• How to handle the media successfully – where the success lies and where mistakes are made.

The interviews:
• Soft interview – aims to familiarise the interviewee with media techniques.
• Tough interview – will cover a controversial issue of which the interviewee only has short notice.

Each interview will be discussed constructively and written feedback will be given. A crew experienced in network television will record the interviews on VHS and a tape will be given to the interviewee at the end of the session.

Advice and discussion on ways to deal with all branches of the media in a pro-active sense, including discussion on how to translate an academic paper into an accessible form for the general public, be they readers of the Times or listeners to local radio.
