Societal demand for products and services that generate or enhance the pleasure of the individual are growing constantly and there are high expectations that science and the pharmaceutical, entertainment and leisure industries will meet, or perhaps even exceed, them. This lecture will consider why this hedonistic demand is increasing; what progress is being made in terms of delivery; possible future developments, and the likely longer-term impact this may have on society as a whole.
