Description

The aim of this course is to equip participants with the principles of effective writing. Step by step, participants will learn techniques for turning their ideas into clear documents. Focusing on research proposals and articles for scientific journals, the course will cover the principles of effective writing; clarity and accuracy in writing; examples of good/bad writing and self- and peer-editing. At the end of the course, each participant will have produced either an article for a scientific journal or a research proposal to second draft stage.

Effective writing is an essential skill for the researcher. Research funding is increasingly competitive so the ability to write clear, convincing proposals is crucial. A key aspect of the scientific process is the reporting of new results in scientific journals in order to disseminate that information to the wider scientific community.

Additional information

This course is primarily aimed at career researchers working in resource-poor countries.

Places are limited to 18 to ensure adequate contact time with each participant

Participants should be active members of a research programme, able to speak and write fluently in English, conversant with computers and with access to e-mail. Participants will be required to submit an example of their writing with their application. This may be a section or whole research paper or proposal.

Lectures/workshops run for three full days at the Institute of Child Health in London from the 10th to the 12th September 2007. However, participants must also commit to between three and five days of independent work after the lectures. The time will be spent writing the article/proposal. This can be completed any time up to the 15th October 2007. All articles will then be submitted to the tutor by e-mail, who will provide a written review and comments on the piece. Peer-editing networks may also be established between participants.
