Description
_WE ARE NOT YET ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE BRIDGING COURSE FOR 2007 _
Following its success in previous years, the Mathematics Department at University College London is offering a two-week bridging course, aimed at students about to attend degree courses in mathematics-related subjects, at UCL. It is expected that students who have applied to the Mathematics Department will have an A at A-level (or equivalent), and those who have applied to other departments will have a B or higher at A-level (or equivalent). The course will have 3 main purposes:
> To smooth out differences between different A-level or mathematics syllabuses, so as to bring students to a uniform starting level as they begin a university course.
> To revise crucial areas of school mathematics with which students may be unhappy.
> To ease the transition between school and university mathematics, which many students find difficult, by encouraging them to apply the mathematical tools they already possess, to problems with which they are not already familiar.
Course Structure
The course will involve a series of lectures covering algebra, calculus and trigonometry and illustrating their uses, separately and together, for tackling problems in several stages. However, most of the participants’ time will be spent working in groups, on problems related to the lectured material, with help and advice available from members of the Department.

Additional information
Cost
UCL students £80.00
External students £100.00
State school students domiciled in the UK (UCL students only) £40.00 – This is part of a government initiative to widen access to university places to students attending state schools in the United Kingdom
The course is open to all students applying to UCL who are about to take a degree in Mathematics or a Mathematics-related subject. Those who have applied can book a place on the course at a discount. It is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow students and familiarise yourself with the College and its surroundings.
THERE WILL NOT BE ANY CLASSES HELD ON THE WEEKEND (15TH AND 16TH SEPTEMBER). Thursday 20th September will be a drop-in day with no lectures/problems classes.
