A unique symposium exploring the concept of emotion from broken hearts to neuroscience. What are emotions? Can you die of a broken heart? Do we control our emotions, or do they control us? Why do we feel love and hate, anger and joy? Come and find out at this special symposium exploring the concept of emotion, with leading views from the worlds of science, history, art and philosophy.

SYMPOSIUM PROGRAMME

Friday 7 September, 19.00-21.00
A dramatic reading of George Meredith’s ‘Modern Love’ by award-winning poet David Harsent, introduced by Louisa Young, author of ‘The Book of the Heart’. Followed by drinks reception, included in the ticket price.

Saturday 8 September, 10.00-16.30
Join authors Dylan Evans, Louisa Young and Ruth Padel; cardiologist Martin Cowie; curators James Peto and Emily Jo Sargent; historian Fay Bound Alberti; professor of psychiatry Hugo Critchley; and social psychologist Clare Cassidy, for a programme packed with heartfelt dialogue, exploring:
• the enduring tension between the head and the heart
• heart imagery in poetry and lyrics throughout the ages
• the physical effects of love and loss on the body
• crowd behaviour at the Hindu Mela
• why emotions are vital to intelligent action
Lunch, optional tour of ‘The Heart’ exhibition and drinks reception are included in the ticket price.
