The last 20 years has seen an upsurge in the repair and restoration of historic and traditional buildings. Professionals and practitioners who undertake conservation work need to stay abreast of practical and technical issues, as well as legislative controls. The programme brings together an authoritative team of speakers and will benefit any professional involved with conservation work – including chartered surveyors, architects, conservation officers, engineers and builders.

The Faculty Team:

Charles Mynors MA MA FRTPI MRICS IHBC
Charles Mynors is a barrister who practises in planning law. He is well-known for his expertise in the law of listed buildings, trees and outdoor advertising. He is Chancellor of the Diocese of Worcester, and a visiting professor, Oxford Brookes University. He is well known for his text book Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas and Monuments (Fourth Edition, Sweet & Maxwell 2006).

Richard Oxley BSc MRICS DipBldgCons(RICS) IHBC
Richard is a chartered surveyor with his own Historic Building Consultancy practice. Richard has an active interest in the traditional repair of old buildings; including the environmental control of damp and timber problems and developing the link between sustainability and traditionally constructed buildings. He is the author of Survey and Repair of Traditional Buildings – A sustainable approach (Donhead 2003).

Francis Maude MA DipArch RIBA AABC
Francis Maude is an associate at Donald Insall Associates Ltd, with whom he has worked since 1991. Francis has worked on projects ranging from the post-fire restoration of Windsor Castle to the repair of Channel 4’s 1900 house, including work for Historic Royal Palaces, the National Trust, the Parliamentary Estate, and on numerous religious buildings and various private houses great and small.

Clive Richardson BSc(Hons) CEng FICE FIStructE MCIArb IHBC
Clive Richardson is a Structural Engineer and a Technical Director, Structural of Scott Wilson. Clive’s daily work ranges from the survey, repair, and development of commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional buildings to the continuing care of arguably England’s greatest church, Westminster Abbey – where he is Engineer to the Dean and Chapter. Clive is also Visiting Lecturer in conservation at the Architectural Association.

Dr Gerard Lynch LCG CertEd MA PhD
Gerard Lynch is an internationally acclaimed and highly respected historic brickwork consultant, master bricklayer, educator and author of Gauged Brickwork: A Technical Handbook (Gower 1990), Brickwork: History, Technology and Practice (volumes 1 and 2) (Donhead 1994). His expert opinion is now regularly sought for proposed repairs and restoration for many important brick buildings.

Dr Ian Sims BSc(Hons), PhD, CEng, FIMMM, CGeol, FGS, FRSA, MICT, MIQA, MEWI
Ian has been a professional consultant in construction materials and their application, regarding both modern and historic uses, for more than 30 years, initially with Sandberg LLP and, since 1996, as a Main Board Director with STATS Limited. He is a co-author of Concrete Petrography. Ian received the Geological Society’s Engineering Group Award in 2003.

Kevin Stubbs BAArch DipBldgCons(AA) CertEd IHBC ICTA
Kevin Stubbs is Director of Bursledon Brickworks Conservation Centre. He comes with a background of education, archaeology and building conservation. Kevin was Director of Archaeology for the Test Valley in Hampshire before moving to the County Council to join the Historic Buildings Bureau, where he eventually became the Principal Building Conservation Officer for the County.
