This meeting will be of interest to any scientist who is involved with the design, understanding or application of interfacially active molecules. The theme of the meeting is the relationship between the molecular structure of surfactants/dispersants and their behaviour in a range of situations, including: static and dynamic effects; the structure of interfaces: and consequences for the properties of bulk systems. Interfacial activity at: solid, air, water, a range of different oils and supercritical CO2.

The Rideal Lecturer is selected on the basis of a distinguished and sustained contribution to colloid and interface science. Alan Pitt’s interests are in the structure-property relationships of surfactants/ dispersants and their effects in applications. The molecular structures he has designed include one, two or three ‘tails’; one or two ‘heads’; sugar and fluoro components; and, more recently, oligomeric moieties. Studies have usually involved investigating the properties of homologous series, leading to an understanding of the sometimes delicate balance of competing interactions in these multi-functional molecules.
