An illustrated lecture by Dr Stephen Palmer FLS on the human impact on the natural environment of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Stephen Palmer was Dean of Stanley Cathedral from 1991-1996 and lecture draws on original research used for his doctoral thesis. Starting with the visits of Charles Darwin and Joseph Hooker to the Falkland Islands in the early 19th century the lecture will show the deleterious effects of the sealing, whaling, sheep farming, and fishing industries upon the natural environment of the islands. Until recent years almost all attempts at conservation have been unsuccessful, but current Falkland Islands Government policy has made conservation one its central concerns. The lecture concludes by outlining some principles of management for the fragile natural environment of these remarkable islands.
