Description

Government obligations towards UK citizens worldwide at a time of rapid global economic and social disruption caused by change to our environment will require improved long term monitoring, modelling and prediction of the global climate. Satellites planned over the next 20 years and beyond as part of the European initiative GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) will provide geospatial information services underpinned by satellite data which will support the understanding of climate change and the impact of adaptation strategies as well as assisting disaster response and long-term development planning.

Three “Fast Track” services will be implemented by 2008 in Land Monitoring, Marine and Emergency Response using existing data sources. Services in atmospheric monitoring and security will follow. Long term data continuity of global data sets will have an important impact, and the second phase of the GMES Space Component programme will be subscribed during the summer of 2007, in order to secure the launch of the first three spacecraft and associated ground infrastructure from 2011 onwards.

The European Commission (EC) and the European Space Agency (ESA) are jointly investing over EUR 2 bn in GMES the next 7 years. GMES offers huge potential for UK industry, scientists and service users, if the UK government grasps the opportunity this year of becoming a major funding partner allowing full participation to shape the programme to meet the challenges of rapid global change.
