This event marks the end of NERC’s Environmental Genomics research programme. NERC has invested GBP 16.5 million over five years to integrate genomic techniques across a wide range of environmental biology topics that are of strategic importance to NERC and its stakeholders.

The programme has:
> Investigated the origins of biodiversity, including the molecular and genomic basis of adaptation in a range of specific systems.
> Addressed questions concerned with environmental health, pollution and disease.
> Quantified the contribution of genes to some important ecosystem services provided by microbes.
> Set new international standards in genomic data management.
> Investigated model systems with well-understood genetic codes alongside a wide range of less studied, but environmentally important, plants, animals and microbes.
> Demonstrated to environmental scientists, regulators and industry, how genomic technologies can be applied to tackle environmental issues. A community of researchers trained to use genomic techniques in environmental sciences has been established.

The findings of this programme will be of interest to a general audience comprising representatives of Government, policy makers, regulators, industry, conservation bodies wider public.
