“A patient preparing for an operation was like a condemned criminal preparing for execution.”
A demonstration of an operation without anaesthetics or antiseptics, in Britain’s only remaining wooden 19th century Operating Theatre. How will you survive…? Lie on the Operating Table and learn the gruesome details of operations before anaesthetics or antiseptics. Wear a “bloody” apron, and see a real Victorian amputation set!

The Old Operating Theatre, Museum & Herb Garret is based in the newly-restored attic of St Thomas’s Church, at 9a St Thomas Street, London, SE1 9RY, a short walk from London Bridge station. The museum is open every day from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm. We are open Bank Holidays except Christmas Day and Boxing Day and we are closed 15th Dec – 5th Jan.
Admission is £5.25 for adults, £4.25 for concessions and £3.00 for children. There is no extra charge for special events and workshop. There is also a gift and bookshop, offering extensive medical and herbal information and a range of children’s toys. Further information is available on the museum’s website at www.thegarret.org.uk.
