A few weeks ago, I constructed this periodic table of London for the Londonist site. Two things just occurred to me: (1) I totally forgot to share it with you guys; (2) everyone loves a puzzle for a Friday afternoon.
Can you work out the identity of the elements, or some of the general themes? It’s fiendish, to say the least. So if you need some pointers, see here.
Note, I’m aware that Wc appears twice, but I can’t be bothered to boot up Photoshop again.
This isn’t like M. Crescent is it?
Excuse me Madam, but does the bus go to all of these stations ?
This is probably impossible for non-Londoners, right? Because I’m usually good at puzzles, but this just looks completely impossible. (Although I think the ones that start with St are all St. Something-or-other.)
Well I looked at the hint and that pretty much gives it away. However, the table is not really periodic in that There is no reason for the grouping and no reason for the octaves. This is a pity as the first significant, logical and partially successful attempt at the periodic table was proposed by Newlands; who was of course a Londoner.
I think there’s a row of hospitals in the transitions, but I only know Guys and St Barts

Yes, it is pretty much impossible for non-londoners, and highly challenging for londoners.
Brian – just about all of it is periodic inasmuch as the rows/columns are mostly in a particular sequence.
Very clever, Matt – I don’t think I could have guessed any of them without the pointers, but given those, I could get most of the geographic and structural landmarks from memory. I did live in London for three years, though, so might be considered a transient Londoner.
Had absolutely no clue with any of the grey boxes, unfortunately.
