    • Science Pub Quiz: Picture Round

      Wednesday, 27 May 2009 - 09:59 UTC

Over 40 people showed up for last night’s pub quiz in the Royal Institution’s swanky Time & Space bar. I had the pleasure of being microphone jockey for the evening in what proved to be a tough but fun quiz.

The winners, with a highly respectable 42/60 included Nature Networkers Frank Norman, Alf Eaton and Jo Scott, ably backed up by photographer Myk Reeve.

For those who couldn’t make it, here’s the first picture round for you to attempt. Answers in the comments, please.

And the next quiz will be on July 27th at the RI. If anyone would like to help set the questions for the guest round, please get in touch.

“We’ve taken the facial features of three famous scientists of yesteryear and ineptly merged them into one hideous countenance. Name them.”

“Building on our earlier experiment, we lured three living scientists into the Royal Institution’s electroanimation laboratory and created this gurning abomination. Again, name them.”

I reckon I can get 2 of each image fairly easily, generally from hirsute clues. The third looks more difficult in each case.

I can’t work out the tops of either of them (top third of the first picture either has hid hand at his temple, or has a very odd ear). The rest of the first are easy, as is the bottom of the second. Is the middle of the second one Richard Dawkins?

I just commented on the other post, but repeat it here:

Well, some of you missed a good evening at the RI last night. The quiz was quite tough – questions about the RI and its scientists, quirky photos of London scientific landmarks (?!) to be identified, and questions ranging from computer viruses to football to popular beat combos. All with a link to science, though sometimes pretty tenuous.

My good luck was to sit on a table with another couple of people who knew some of the answers. And unbelievably, between us we knew more of the answers than the other teams so we won the whole thing.

Those are some crazy pictures! Too early to look at them… back with a go at the answers later.

Ah. Got the long hair in the second photo. A quick google confirmed a guess.

The good news is that the person won’t see this post: blogs are too much like Facebook, and we all know what that does to people.

Bob – I refrained from hints, anyway that bit is obvious.

Feel free to leave answers now. I think we’re far enough down the comments that people can avoid seeing them if they want to try and work it out themselves.
