    • Science Pub Quiz: You Know You Want To

      Wednesday, 13 May 2009 - 16:46 UTC

Everyone loves a good pub quiz. And one of the best is coming up. How do I know? Cos I’ll be hosting it.

Get to the Royal Institution bar for 7pm on 26 May for six rounds of science trivia. The questions come from Martin Davies at the Ri, with help from me, Scott Keir and Pascal Craw. We’ve pitched most of the questions at a level that anyone with an interest in science would be able to have a bash at. So we won’t be asking you to solve differential equations or write out the citric acid cycle. Entry is £2 per person and there’s no need to book in advance.

      So, who’s up for it?

Is this a team jolly or is it every man for himself?

Ah, I just clicked the link…seems it can be either way.

Yup. I’d recommend teams of 4 to 5. Alternatively, you could do it on your own, or we could get you into one of the other teams.

I tried to get a team together at Mill Hill but there were no takers. I’m now in two minds whether to go to the quiz or to the BSA popsci thing at Waterstone’s.

Sorry that I’m conflicting. How late do you reckon you guys will be there? I can probably head on over after the gig for post-quiz drinks — I assume it’s in the bar, so I’ll be able to get in?

You don’t want to go up against Jenny in a science trivia quiz. She stormed them at the RIN on Thursday.

          Yay! #NNmeetLondon anyone?

Sorry to clash, Jenny. The RI picked the date yonks ago.
Yup, the next one will be on the 27 July. Stick it in your diaries.

What? You mean we memorized the citric acid cycle all for nothing?

I actually don’t even remember a single component of it at all. I mentally mixed it up with glycolysis and was thinking about fructose-6-phosphate.

Eva, this is precisely what I thought.

I think I would be useless at this science quiz. The two things that M@ explicitly excluded are things I have studied.

Well, some of you missed a good evening at the RI last night. The quiz was quite tough – questions about the RI and its scientists, quirky photos of London scientific landmarks (?!) to be identified, and questions ranging from computer viruses to football to popular beat combos. All with a link to science, though sometimes pretty tenuous.

My good luck was to sit on a table with another couple of people who knew some of the answers. And unbelievably, between us we knew more of the answers than the other teams so we won the whole thing.

So, worth a go next time (July 27th I believe) if you are free.
