Fate of the Boston Globe

About three months ago, the Monday print edition of the Boston Globe shed its Health/Science section to cut costs. Regardless of this sad measure, the bleeding has continued in earnest. Over the last several weeks, Bostonians have witnessed the high drama of New York Times Co. versus the several Globe unions. NYT Co. is, of course, having some budget issues at a certain flagship paper and is desperately trying to stay afloat. The Globe, meanwhile, is edging ever closer to the chopping block. Last night marked a turn for the worse when the union voted against a new set of cost-cutting measures, including decreases in pay and benefits. The Times Company responded quickly and ruthlessly by slashing pay across the board by nearly one quarter.
The Boston Globe has reached its moment of crisis. What should become of this institution? What would a shuttered Globe mean for the reporting of science and technology in the Greater Boston Area?

Update: The Globe has a reached a deal with the unions that is largely similar in content to the demands proffered by the New York Times company and rejected by unions a couple weeks ago.
