Implanted medical devices have markedly improved the lives of patients suffering from debilitating diseases for which other effective therapies did not exist. Lives that would have been lost are now saved through implant technology. But are these past breakthroughs a prologue to the future? We will examine a number of these technological breakthroughs, and the current innovation climate for factors that support — or impede — future progress.

Paul Citron, (NAE), was vice president of Technology Policy and Academic Relations when he retired in 2003 after 32 years with Medtronic, Inc. He is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and has twice won the American College of Cardiology’s Governor’s Award for Excellence.
