2008 has been a great year for Nature Network. We’ve grown in user base and activity, we put on a really successful conference and so what better way to end off the year than with a makeover?!
Click here for a detailed description of all the changes we made to the site today.
In short, we’ve removed the left-hand margin across the entire site, to make more room for actual content in the middle of the page. The result (we hope!) is a less cluttered website.
We’ve also introduced several new pages that are linked to from a new level of navigation that you’ll see when you click on any of the main menu items (Forums, Groups, People, Blogs, Hubs, You). These pages are meant too make it easier and quicker for you to find interesting content.
We hope you like it. Let us know what you think by email network at nature.com or by posting a comment here.
Thanks for removing the “most commented blogs” list in the left margin – right after I make the list for the first time!
Only kidding, the new site looks great.
Cath, the list still exists, but in a different place.
If the text is going to spread across the page, it might be more readable in a slightly larger font, for those of us
given to self abuseof a certain age.Help! I’m suffering from agoraphobia! The space! The Space!
Actually, I think it does look cleaner, but I’ll need a couple of days to get used to the look.
Yes, it’s nice to have a bit more breathing room, isn’t it?
Henry, I’ll have to run your idea by our designers. I think increasing font size is not necessarily trivial.
Urgh, I’m a little disoriented. I left the office to help a friend celebrate submitting his thesis, I come back after a little tipple, and
I’mNN is all over the place. Nothing to do with the sparkling strawberry wine, officer.I like the wider design a lot, but wonder if the links at the top of the page (home, forums, hubs…) could follow us as we scroll down? I know how to do it with frames, but this web 2.0 business…
Ahhh, that’s better. More space to relax and spread out a bit. Seriously, looks a lot cleaner. Great!
You’re not here to relax, Haxton. Get blogging!
No, I don’t want what Mike wants. The tabs should stay put!
And I already said elsewhere that I liked it, but I’ll repeat it so I don’t look like I’m only here to be grumpy: I love the new design!
I’m sorry Ennis! I’ll get on with it, right after I…yawn…stretch…yawn…sleep.
I’m still scared. The comments look so much more.. significant.
Henry, increasing font size is a browser function. You could just hit apple-plus if you had a real computer, but I’m guessing something similar exists.
Hold the CTRL key down, and scroll up or down with the mouse.
Can we have an RSS for the comments, please?
So are we allowed to use bigger images now? Wider than 390 pixels…?
Good idea about the RSS. There are a few other pages that need RSS feeds. Will put this onto our ever so long list of to-dos. And yes, bigger photos should work now.
Any chance of being able to upload images from our own computers without first having to post them on the internet?
(Sorry to add to the to-do list!)
When, he asked plaintively, will we be able to use proper html?
Cath, Richard, these things you’re asking for should be do-able in the new Moveable Type platform that you’ll be migrated to later this year. I will create a private group soon and invite you all to join. There, you should be able to learn more about the details.
