      Even with all its universities, Massachusetts lags behind other states in R&D spending

          National average – $146 per capita
          DC – $550 per capita
          Maryland – $410 (Johns Hopkins accounts for 60% of this)
          Massachusetts – $310 (Harvard and MIT account for 50%)
          North Dakota – $240
          Alaska – $220
          New Hampshire – $210
