EMBO/ELSO Database on expert women in the molecular life sciences.
I’ve just been alerted to this database
The objective is to promote gender equality in Europe, by improving the visibility of women accomplished in their fields, from senior postdocs to senior independent scientists.
The database aims to help scientists, universities, research institutions, political institutions, conference organizers and journal editors to identify appropriately qualified women scientists:
- as candidates for professorships and other positions
- to speak at conferences and in seminar programmes
- to participate in advisory groups, on monitoring panels, committees and commissions
- to review manuscripts, to write commissioned reviews and to serve on the editorial boards of journals.

Hi, Frank.
I’ve been a member of this database since 2006. I don’t appear to have met the needs of any scientists, universities, research institutions, political institutions, conference organizers or journal editors so far. But maybe later?
I would be interested, though, to know if maintaining this database is worth the time it takes – do you think EMBO has usage information?

Heather – that is interesting. I wonder how widely it has been advertised, to potential subjects and to potential searchers.
While applauding the intentions behind it, I also wonder who would really use this database and for what?

Thanks for this, Frank. We have now advertised the database across our various networks.
I know you’re not meant to advertise, but I am going to sneak in a mention of our GetSET Women website, where any woman in science, engineering, technology or the built environment is welcome to sign up. We have just this month relaunched it so its much easier to join and edit your page (free too by the way). If you join you get our regular newsletter summaries of relevant news, opportunities, first notice of some of our initiatives and funding schemes. Also, women who work to support women in science etc are welcome (eg HR professionals, careers advisers, academics, teachers, journalists etc).
It is also searchable – we know some women on the list have been approached to be ambassadors or speakers etc. We are working to raise its profile, so if you are looking for a woman to join a committee, speak at an event, be a mentor etc this is the place to start.
End of commercial break!

This is really helpful, I didn’t know about either the EMBO database of the GetSET website and have now bookmarked both.
Thanks Frank and Ruth
