Do you DIY?

I covered a story for the BBC a couple of months ago about DIY gadget enthusiasts – hackers and suchlike. They are overwhelmingly male. But in my household, I do almost all the DIY, which includes constructing flatpack furniture, appliance-mending etc.
I wonder how many females out there are also DIY inclined… Are you?

Yes. I live in a house with one man and three (sometimes four) women and when I grew up I lived in a house with one man (my dad) and five females – my dad was of the generation when the “man of the house” did all the DIY, decorating, etc, so he taught me and my sisters as he went along. DIY is just part of life along with the ironing. I have to admit that my husband is pretty good at the DIY, but pride will not allow me to defer to him on such matters even when my secret soul knows that the curtain rail will collapse less quickly if he has fitted it than if I have.
One thing I do regret is the fact that appliances come with fitted plugs. I regarded wiring up an appliance to a plug as part of “DIY duty” so that I could then in all conscience defer something more tricky such as constructing bookshelves, saying “your turn”.
