Genome Canada cancels stem-cell project funding

Genome Canada has pulled its support for an international stem-cell consortium, The International Regulome Consortium. The consortium aims to understand the regulatory networks that guide cell behaviour, and expected Genome Canada to provide Can$20 million (US$16 million) over 5 years towards the project.
The consortium head, Michael Rudnicki, says that the decision was made because the organization lacked the funds after receiving no money in Canada’s 2009 federal budget . Though the head of Genome Canada, Martin Godbout says that the organization’s discussion can after an interim review of the project’s science, management and budget recommended substantial changes.

The Ontario government has commitment to distribute an extra CAN$100 million for life science funding this year Stem cell scientists in Ontario expect a boost from their province’s . Researchers in selected areas of life sciences, includeing stem cell research, need to state their intent to file by mid June, and submit final applications by August 31, with almost all the funds expected to be allocated by the end of the year.
In explaining the rationale for the program, Ontario’s Minister of research and Innovation John Wilkinson specifically named the U.S. stimulus package and President Obama’s move to fund more stem-cell research.
