In a Name: defining science

A blog post on Drugmonkey about scientific misconduct has raised a discussion on the definition of science which I picked up on Bicurious . I then came across another forum benefits of blogging , where one of the commentors said she wasn’t a scientist as she was a PhD student. This was quickly dismissed by another commentor who said PhD students were scientists.
Good because while doing my own PhD I always called myself a scientist.
But now things get interesting. I no longer work at the bench, and work in the policy field. But I still identify myself as a scientist (I only stopped working at the bench in July). This begs me to questions: when am I no longer a scientist, or when should I no longer identify myself as one?
I should point out I have yet to submit my thesis (due in April…so close…) some am at a cross roads.
