Hey all,

This PhD opportunity was recently posted on PSCI-COM and I thought group members might find it interesting:

PHD STUDENTSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Applications are invited for a three year PhD studentship offered by Interdisciplinary Centre for Research and Teaching in STEM Education (ICRTSE) based in the University of Glasgow Faculty of Education and funded by the Glasgow Science Centre through support from GSK.

Supervisor: Vic Lally

Theme: ‘Improving the Health of the Nation – The Challenge’1 clearly outlines the health issues facing Scotland:

Scotland has poor health by UK and European standards
There are strong cultural influences on health
Health improvement requires change – by both society and individuals
Glasgow Science Centre’s ‘Life & Health Outreach Programme’ will bring together experts in science communication, educationalists, researchers and industry to ensure that its effects go beyond basic knowledge of body systems. It will include information on cutting edge research and allow audiences to make informed choices about health and health care.

This project will bring extended support to teachers, pupils and family audiences across Scotland, to effectively engage with the new Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and ideals of healthy living choices. With emphasis on the ‘Our Living World’ component of the curriculum, this programme will be designed to support effective learning and teaching about healthy living.

The Project’s ‘educational experience’ will be developed around a series of exhibits that are interactive and challenging. The exhibits will be supported by specially trained staff, and interactive workshops / science shows. The programme will be suitable mainly for school audiences but will also support family learning, allowing opportunities for children to work together, and with their parents/grandparents/teachers.

The studentship will be full time and located at the University of Glasgow
Start date: at or soon after 1 April 2009
Duration 3 years HOME fees plus stipend at Research Council agreed rates (£12,800 for 08/09) plus access to faculty/departmental research support.

Applicants should be normally resident in the UK and should have completed an honours degree (first or upper second class, or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. In addition applicants should have some experience of educational evaluation.
