This isn’t live anywhere else yet but we wanted to share the topics we’re looking to cover at the next event on 26th September.

We’re sticking to the format of three streams but we’re going to provide more information on who should be attending what this year to make your lives a little easier.

        Graduate stream
This stream is aimed at those at the very early stage of their careers who have a BSc, MSc or are currently studying for their PhD. It is meant as a practical introduction to finding your first role in science

Morning Session – Practical advice on taking the next step
Basics of finding and applying for scientific roles
        Building your network
        Choosing a mentor

Afternoon Session – Key considerations when choosing your career path
How important is mobility for young scientists?
        A career path in Academia
        Working in Industry

        Post Doctoral stream
The Post Doctoral stream will cover essential topics for scientists currently doing a Post Doc. It will give direction and practical advice on finding funding, setting up your own team and what to expect from your next career steps.

Morning Session – Demystifying the unknown
        How to get published
        Preparing to do research abroad

Hints and tips on successful grant applications
How to set up a lab and manage it

        Nontraditional careers for scientists -
As the name would suggest this stream is suitable for all levels of scientists who may be considering a move away from the academic structure. We’ll provide sound advice and information on how to get into a wide variety of positions which require the skills aqcuired when studying a scientific discipline from speakers who have done just that.

        Morning session -
Laying down the Law in science, careers in the legal profession
DREAM JOB, a talk from someone in the ultimate science related job
        CRO’s – a different route into industry

        Afternoon session
NGO’s – Save the world and keep a career
DREAM JOB - a talk from someone in the ultimate science related job

Let us know what you think. We’ll be finalising speakers in due course and again suggestions on who you want to hear from are welcomed!

        Dear Colleague

Following on from our email on 15 September 2007 asking you to confirm your attendance at The Source Event we have, to date, not received a response from some people.

However, we have received confirmations from over 600 delegates which unfortunately means we must CLOSE REGISTRATION.

This means that although some people pre-registered initially, due to the massive popularity of The Source Event we cannot accomodate any new confirmed delegates as of Monday 17/9/07.

We apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience this has caused but on the bright side, we will be running two events in 2008.

So in summary, please DO NOT attend The Source Event on 21 September 2007 if you have not re-confirmed your attendance and we will be in touch with details of our 2008 events.

The Source Event now has over 600 registrants.

As the event is further promoted by universities, institutes and various websites, many more will register. It’s free to attend but space is limited so tell your friends and colleagues to register on the event website before space runs out.

At The Source Event you will be able to choose relevant talks and topics from the careers conference and meet with potential employers as well as fellow scientists.

Invite others to join Nature Network and The Source Event forum to discuss career-related topics before and after the event.

Greetings! The Source Event is a new dedicated Science Career Fair launched by Naturejobs and London First in London for 2007. More about it can be found here and here.

The Source Event will be split into a dynamic and exciting exhibition with plenary conference and workshop sessions running alongside the event. It will promote the UK and Europe as a great place to pursue a career in Science, be it in industrial research, research organisations or academia. It will present the best opportunities from the best organisations: public, private, national and international.

And more importantly, jobseekers will be able to meet with potential employers who are offering hundreds of genuine vacancies! Our plenary and workshop sessions will provide a unique opportunity to meet high profile scientists and gain careers information and advice.

We have set up this forum so that registrants for The Source Event can discuss and ask questions prior to attending. The organisers of the event will be participating in the forum discussions, so please make full use of the opportunity to provide feedback on what you would like to see at the career fair.

        See you all in September!
