This isn’t live anywhere else yet but we wanted to share the topics we’re looking to cover at the next event on 26th September.

We’re sticking to the format of three streams but we’re going to provide more information on who should be attending what this year to make your lives a little easier.

Graduate stream
This stream is aimed at those at the very early stage of their careers who have a BSc, MSc or are currently studying for their PhD. It is meant as a practical introduction to finding your first role in science

Morning Session – Practical advice on taking the next step
Basics of finding and applying for scientific roles
Building your network
Choosing a mentor

Afternoon Session – Key considerations when choosing your career path
How important is mobility for young scientists?
A career path in Academia
Working in Industry

Post Doctoral stream
The Post Doctoral stream will cover essential topics for scientists currently doing a Post Doc. It will give direction and practical advice on finding funding, setting up your own team and what to expect from your next career steps.

Morning Session – Demystifying the unknown
How to get published
Preparing to do research abroad
Careers in industry for postdocs

Afternoon Session – The world of grants and funding
Science policy and the funding landscape
Hints and tips on successful grant applications
How to set up a lab and manage it

Nontraditional careers for scientists -
As the name would suggest this stream is suitable for all levels of scientists who may be considering a move away from the academic structure. We’ll provide sound advice and information on how to get into a wide variety of positions which require the skills aqcuired when studying a scientific discipline from speakers who have done just that.

Morning session -
Laying down the Law in science, careers in the legal profession
DREAM JOB, a talk from someone in the ultimate science related job
CRO’s – a different route into industry

Afternoon session
NGO’s – Save the world and keep a career
DREAM JOB - a talk from someone in the ultimate science related job
Careers in Science writing/copywriting/ editing

Let us know what you think. We’ll be finalising speakers in due course and again suggestions on who you want to hear from are welcomed!

    Hi Andrew,
Hope you are well? Just looking at the outline of the the programme I think it looks great and certainly covers the points raised in the Focus group I attended after the first Source Event. Do you think you’ll have the “Meet the employers lunch” also?

    Hi Charlie,

All is well and busy planning this event which is coming together nicely.

Thanks for the comments on the programme we do aim to please! The employers lunch is still something we’re looking into but really depends on the buy in from exhibitors and speakers as well as the logistics.

What I’m very positive that we will be able to provide are workshops. These may be run by employers which would give a similar experience to the lunch (minus the food of course). We should have up to 3 running at one time for up to 60 people and they’ll only be accessible by those attending the conference part. Hopefully this is the type of added benefit you guys were asking for.

    More details to follow!

p.s. we’re hoping to launch the new site for this event very shortly.
