Each of the participants at the Portofino Workshop was either an adopter or implementer of Systems Biology in industry, a developer of underpinning methods and/or technologies, an academic exploring its application to study disease, or even as a sponsor of research in this field. Each offered a particular perspective that is relevant to the key question of how to derive the greatest impact and to optimise return on investment for the benefit of human health. The output summarised in the Nature Commentary and in the forthcoming White Paper reflects the energetic and enthusiastic contributions by of all of the following, a number of whom were present as interested individuals rather than formal representatives of their organisations:
