I received this information last week from Sharlini Sankaran, Assistant Director and Research Manager in the Office of Science and Technology at the North Carolina Department of Commerce

Hello,

I’m currently the Assistant Director of the NC Office of Science and Technology, a division of the NC Department of Commerce.

One of my duties is to maintain and update the North Carolina Nanotechnology website, http://www.ncnanotechnology.com . The site is owned by the Office of Science and Technology, a division of the NC Department of Commerce. If you visit the website, you’ll see that it’s a clearinghouse of information about nanotechnology activities in North Carolina.

I am looking for one or two students who would be interested in writing feature stories for the website. This opportunity would be ideal for a student interested in science policy, technology-based economic development, or science/ business writing.

We wouldn’t be able to pay writers, but it’s a great opportunity to gain experience interviewing people, writing science/ tech stories for a general audience, and to add to their CV. Students will obviously be credited with the stories that are published on the website. I’ll help provide suggestions for stories and contacts for the students to interview. I’ll also act as editor for the stories and will help the student as much or as little as they need during the process. We’d ideally like to feature a new story every month, although I know that students get very busy with classes. People can contact me directly if interested.

Previous feature writers have been undergraduate or graduate students from various fields of study. We like to have a balance of features on academia and business. I wrote 2 stories for the website last year (the Joint School story and the environmental safety story).

You can see the feature stories at http://www.ncnanotechnology.com/public/root/features.asp . Thanks so much for passing the word along! Feel free to call me if you have any questions or suggestions. Students can contact me directly to find out more. The cell number [919.971.7318 (cell)] is the best one to reach me.
