Visualizing the Monster Smash! The View from the LHC Control Room and Tips for LHG Data Voyeurs

In case you missed it, yesterday was the day they turned on the Large Hadron Collider. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about particle physics, but was intrigued when I saw this screenshot, taken at 10:18am on 09/10/08:

Apparently Atlantis is a Java-based application for visualizing events recorded by ATLAS, one of the particle detectors installed at the LHC (More info in this PDF")

HYPATIA is another project for visualizing data from ATLAS:

The LHC is predicted to generate 700MB of data per second, which will be distributed using the LHG (or LHC Grid). The grid is comprised of three tiers of datacenters: Tier-0 is at the LHC, Tier-1 centers will store the data, and Tier-2 centers will do much of the analysis of the data.

For data voyeurs, the GridView project allows anyone to observe/monitor the data generation and transfer rates from each of the detector projects:
