Freelance Science Writers
Advertised position title: Freelance Writer
Job Location: Telecommuting (off-site, independent)
Medium: Primarily wire service, occasional non-news (corporate collateral for print and web media)
Job Type: Part-time, as-needed
Salary: Paid, hourly or per job, depending on assignment and experience.
Background:
Science & Technology Ventures is the technology transfer office at Columbia University. Our core mission is to transfer technology and innovation from the University to the marketplace for the benefit of society. STV is considered one of the leading technology transfer offices in the world, with over 300 invention disclosures from faculty, ~50 license deals, and 10-12 start-ups each year. More information can be found at www.stv.columbia.edu.
STV is seeking freelance writers to write press releases that will be used to publicize: a) Columbia inventions and technologies with promising commercial application, b) licensing transactions with industrial partners and start-ups who will bring our technologies to markets, and c) STV news and events. Since our activities are largely centered around transfer of scientific and/or medical discoveries, it is preferable that writers have a formal scientific background or are able to demonstrate facility with science writing. On occasion, we seek writers to develop and adapt/edit content for corporate collaterals, e.g. brochures, reports, website, etc. Such assignments do not typically require scientific background.
Application Instructions: Send resume with writing samples, including at least one feature length story and three press releases, preferably covering science, technology, or business topic/news to stvmedia [at] columbia.edu.
Deadline (if applicable): open

Dear Alejandro,
The freelance assignments only come up occasionally. Once your application has been approved, then as we need press releases, we would call upon you to take an assignment. You would still be free to turn it down if you were busy at the time. As for how much time it takes to write an individual press release, that’s up to you. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Cindy -
Thak you Cindy for your reply.
Best regards,
Alejandro -
