Very funny.

Yeah, read about this earlier.
What a complete cock-up.

Steffi got it first (as far as I know anyway!)

Was just checking that the Nature news team were up to scratch – answer yes, they got it on 10 Dec.

Apologies for the serial replying, but I have to say that my sympathies are totally with the journal on this one! These things can happen so easily, despite checks at every stage of the process. And sometimes, even checks at every stage won’t catch bloopers – Nature recently and famously had a front cover (editorial) of Obama and McCain and an advertisement on the back cover of two dogs in rather similar poses.

I think this a much more serious faux pas than the presidential dogs. The suggestion that it was checked by a sinologist seems rather lame. Surely a native Chinese speaker should have been used. It sounds rather as if no-one checked it and they are now covering their backs.
Its still funny though.

Now is the time for Nature to go downmarket. After all, something has to be done to maintain sales figures in this recessionary age. Therefore I humbly suggest a Page 3 Scientist. Sharon (26) works on high-temperature superconductors. She raises our temperature anytime. Geddit?
Perhaps not.

Maxine, I saw it on Bora’s friendfeed, I think – this got around so quickly. It got (rather gleefully) reported on by the biggest German newspapers and weeklies. The journal supposedly changed the cover and they’re sticking the new version over the dodgy (already printed..) one (I wonder who gets that job..).

Similar sexist covers sometimes happen without being a mistake. Check out this article in BMJ: Babes and boobs: Analysis of JAMA cover art
