Blogger Inspiration

I am about to start as part of a group blog for the soon-to-be Nature Network NYC hub. Since I a fairly new to this, I was wondering if some of the more experienced bloggers could offer some advice on where their inspiration comes from. I have some ideas of my own, but they say nothing can substitute experience.

Hey Caryn, I would suggest posting this here as well. You’ll get lots of answers.

Thanks Corie!

I see lots of things that catch my eye. There was a fairly boring expedition to drill an ice core in the Antarctic, for example, but I knew the historical name of the camp name they gave it, so that became “Science in the mists of K’un Lun” – next up, “The Republican Who Saved Darwin”
You’ll probably start off just writing about new studies but after you get going the ideas are everywhere.

Thank for the tips Hank. It seems that blogging is a skill that becomes more natural and fluid with experience. I am looking forward to it.

Hi Caryn,
Trust your gut that people who end up reading your blog will find the same things interesting that you find interesting, don’t worry too much if you feel like you’re making up a process as you go along, and come up with some self-preserval mechanisms so entries don’t malinger unposted or gobble up all your time.
Welcome!

Thanks Monya, looking forward to reading your blog.

I wrote something similar last year.
No good answers though laugh

I think the whole point of blogging (and writing in general) is to already have something to say – there’s no magic inspiration. An acquaintance of mine named Greg Critser has written a few popular books but blogs infrequently because he says “we should only write when we absolutely must” – which is different than the more rigid “You have to write every day” thing you hear, but that advice is mostly from book authors who are already writing from a framework they created and are just getting it done creatively, a day at a time.
In blogging you don’t have that framework, it’s supposed to be fun. I wrote a thing today about the first computer game – because I absolutely had to. :) But I hadn’t written since last week. Still didn’t do “The Republican who saved Darwin”, though, because it hasn’t made me.

I don’t think anyone (who gets listened to, anyway) has seriously claimed “You have to write every day” for quite some time, now. Quality is becoming more and more important.

Well, I am old! That’s what we got told, back in the day. Not that I ever listened but that was the theory – writing, like music or art, took some talent but also a lot of practice and that meant a disciplined approach.
