    • Good idea! Matt? ;-)

    • Museum admission is complimentary anyway, as it’s hard to find a museum in London that charges entry.

Here’s what we were thinking so far:

Thurs evening: pub crawl of London pubs with scientific themes (led by me).

Friday daytime: walking tour of key scientific sites/museums (led by me…again).

      Friday evening: Restaurant meal.

      Saturday: CONFERENCE!

Saturday evening: a drink or two at the Royal Institution before moving on to a local bar/pub.

    • Great! I shall be landing in Heathrow at 8pm on Friday night. It would be nice if I could join you in the restaurant where you will be dining. Could anyone please write to me with his/her mobile phone number so that I can communicate with you?
      Cheers, Mz

    • no museums charge admission???? wow, this is EXCELLENT news!! what else is free in london?

    • Some very specialist ones charge, but otherwise all the major museums and galleries (and many minor ones) are free. There are over 20 science/medicine museums to get your teeth into.

What else is free? Hmmm, not much, other than too many newspapers.

    • My wife has very generously agreed to set me loose in the UK for more than just the conference weekend, so I’ll be looking for other things to do (and people to do them with). As of now, it looks like I’ll be getting in very early on the 28th, and leaving sometime on the 8th. I’m not sure if I’ll be staying in the London area the entire time, or if I’ll be exploring some other parts of the country.

Right now, besides the conference, there are one or two things I’d like to do:

      Visit Down House (absolute must)
See the William Smith map at the Geological Society

I’m very open to other suggestions.

    • Mike – great call about the Smith map. If you wanna come on our Friday science tour, we can stop off at the Geological Society to view the map. The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Linnean Society are also next door, so I might be able to persuade them to give us all a bit of a tour if there’s interest.

Down House is a bit far out of London for us to go en masse, but it’s a good alternative if you’re not so interested in the tour.

    • I’m hoping to make it in time for the walking tour, although it would help to know (+/-) a few hours what the targeted start time would be. (And if it might be possible to drop a bag/bags somewhere nearby.)

I’d definitely be interested to see anything of interest at the neighboring societies, too.

I figured that Down House was too far off the beaten path to figure in the official festivities. However, hangovers and schedules permitting, I was thinking about heading that way either on Sunday 31 Aug or Wed 3 Sept. (They’re closed 1st & 2nd.)

What I wasn’t sure of is whether there were official and/or unofficial festivities in the works for Sunday, or if anyone else would be interested in going there with me on either of those days.

    • The ‘official’ festivities stop on Saturday evening, but a group trip to Down (or anything else) on the Sunday would be welcome, I’m sure.

    • I went to Down House recently and found it marvellous. It is a bit of a way, but well worth the effort. As well as the fascinating house itself (excellent audio tour by David Attenborough), and of course the Sand Walk (closed because of danger of falling trees when I visited), amazing vegetable plots (awesome), wonderful gardens, etc. Lovely for picnics on the grass, but there is also a small but fine cafe.

I feel I need to spend at least one day of the weekend en famille, so I won’t come on the Sunday trip, but I wonder if you could persuade the owner himself, NN blogger and scourge of the “prints”, to come along to conduct the tour and offer insights?
