Sessions/talks wanted

Based on feedback we’ve gotten from you and others, we’ve decided that the conference format will be a hybrid one. Most of the session topics, speakers and schedule will be established by July. But we will reserve a few of the rooms and time slots for sessions that will be self-organized the morning of August 30. We’ll make sure there’s time on the 30th to do that.
So let’s begin with a call for session topics. Post ideas here for sessions (talks, panel discussions, workshops, etc) that you want to attend (not to speak at). If you can, please give suggestions for speakers and specify what sort of format you’re looking for: for example, a one-person talk, a panel, a hands-on workshop, something else?
In particular, we are looking for
- 1 or 2 keynote speakers
- one panel discussion to wrap up the day
- concurrent sessions/talks (preset)
If you are proposing a session that you want to speak at, post those ideas on the Sessions/talks Offered topic.
Deadline: please post your ideas here by Friday June 6. Depending on how many ideas we get, we may do an informal poll online after June 6 to see which ideas are most popular. Based on that, we’ll invite the speakers and set the programme by July.
You can also email us at network@nature.com with session ideas.

I’d need fewer than ten people to turn up to fund my trip…
So if more than 10 turn up, you have to pay for yourself?

Something on what Martin says about persuading depts to set up a ‘resident blogger’ might be useful.
Perhaps Martin himself could do this?

Richard, we have already more than enough stuff to talk about. But we could do a panel discussion on The next practical steps to promote science blogging. Something we can take home.

That would be super. Gets my vote.

That session could be towards the end. Maybe we will be able to come up with a list of
3510 things that should be done next. And we can of course start thinking about that list before the meeting. One other point on that list is already clear to me: science bloggers need regular meetings. I would be happy to help with that panel. -
I agree with Aleks’ comments. Also, I’d like to see a session about science blogging and politics. The blogosphere’s most popular blogs are undoubtedly political ones, so what role do we have to play here? There’s plenty of fodder … stem cell research, creationism…

Thanks everyone for lots of great ideas. Matt and I have taken note of all your suggestions and we’re piecing together a programme now. We’ll be posting it to the forum when it’s almost finalized.
We will leave spots open for sessions that you can organize the morning of the conference. So if you come up with more ideas between now and then, be sure to show up to the conference on time (or early, even) to make sure your suggestion gets heard and voted on.

You guys have no idea how envious I am now and will be at the time of the conference. I’ve been stalking this forum and will keep to do so throughout the proceedings…

Corie said that she is piecing together a program now, but surely a discussion about audio and video in science blogs will sneak in somewhere?
-
Good idea about videos/audio in blogging. That can be a part of the ‘what makes a good blog/how to improve your blog’ session, and/or it can be a separate session proposed on the day of the conference. We have at least 3 or 4 open slots available for sessions proposed and organized the day of.
