For those of us not living in or near London, what are the interesting things to do for the scientific tourist touristic scientist on the Friday before the conference? If a few others are interested as well, maybe we can do something as a group?

Aha, this is my speciality. I’d be delighted to take any conference attendees on a tour of London’s scientific highlights. London has over 30 scientific and medical museums, so you’re spoilt for choice.
As well as the museums, the streets of London are full of memorials and plaques to Newton, Darwin, Faraday, Jenner, Benjamin Franklin and a host of others.
I can plan a walking tour that takes in the best museums and sites of interest if a few people will be around on the Friday.

Might be up for that. Make sure there’s a few pubs along the way. Martin’s buying.

Sounds worth coming down early just for that, Matt!

If there’s one thing I’d declare my ‘specialist subject’ ahead of London trivia, it would be ‘London pubs’. I can even lead us on a scientifically themed pub crawl in the evening.

Matt, please count me in for that
drinkingwalking tour.Richard, if you come all the way to London, I will of course invite you to
1234 beers. -
For those that have not been to the UK, here’s a splendid ‘sneak peek’ travelogue of, well, not London, but Birmingham narrated by Telly Savalas.
ENJOY…

Oh, you’ve got to save the scientific pub crawl for the Saturday night! That has to be a highlight. And a test the following morning as to why we went into each pub. (Hint: Not because Richard was still thirsty…)

Even I am beginning to feel tempted now, though I can’t remember last time I was in a pub. (This is a blatant lie, actually, I was in one last weekend I have just remembered, but it has renamed itself a Tapas bar.)

I don’t know what you people are implying about my drinking habits .
But I’d certainly put a vote in for Saturday night rather than Friday – the speakers might be a little… ‘tired’, else.

I’m in for this, too. Both the site-seeing tour and the “Which famous scientist threw up here?” competition.
