What do you like about being a researcher in Oxford?

Postdocs (and other researchers) are very good at complaining about things that good be organized better. Although this is very important, and we should actively try to improve things, I wanted to start this group with a positive forum. What do you think is good about Oxford? Punting and strawberries, pubs and beer? The closeness to London? Academic prestige?

I expect my response is atypical because I am not the usual post-doc researcher. Have been researching and teaching for more than 20 years.
My experience of what is good about Oxford is that I am given a lot of scope to do what I want, a great deal of academic freedom but this is in quite a structured framework. Perhaps International Development is a bit different from many other situations.

Pimm’s, Royal Oak, Standard Tandoori, parks, Museum of Natural History …… and complaining.

Hi Cathie,
Where does your framework come from? From your group, funding body? Is the Oxford working environment, in terms of academic freedom and structure different from other universities?

Ahh… Oxford.
Punting on the Cam. Whoops that’s Cambridge.
It is a lovely city, with nice people, some very interesting research and very polite tramps.
