For their July 2008 editorial, the Nature Cell Biology team decided to take a retrospective look at Nature Precedings in Birthday precedings. (I have to admit that I love the title…)

Looking at the cell biology community’s use of Precedings, the editorial discusses concerns about scooping, uptake rates compared to other disciplines, and the posting of negative results.

It’s a good editorial, worth reading if you have any interest in Precedings or related efforts to change the publishing landscape.

Sadly, it’s behind the paywall… hint, hint. :-)

This is a very good editorial. The group at Nature Precedings should be proud of what they are doing. I think that adaptation by all “biological” scientists is going to continue to be slow. However, slow does not mean never. As there are generational shifts in the expectations of publication, and the acceptances of sharing ideas more broadly, sites such as Precedings and PlosOne will gain users. We can’t forget that unlike for our physics friends this is all new.
