Hello to all New Nature Network PhD Students.

Please Introduce yourself here and tell us about your PhD.. like..

PhD in What?

Where PhD?

and big question..

Why doing PhD?

It will help our members and visitors to know more about you.

Thanks

    • Hi everyone,

I’m Helen from the University of British Columbia, and am doing a PhD in Medical genetics. The goal of my work is to identify protein complexes required for specific intracellular transport pathways, using genome-wide approaches.

I decided to do a PhD, because I worked in lots of different labs as an undergraduate, and found that there was always interesting projects and people around me.

    • Hi, I am Swastik from delhi university, planning to go for a phd, m in my final year undergrad this year. Lookin forward to complete one/two more years and then going for a phd

    • Hi all.

I’m Daniel, and I am (technically) an impostor. Basically, I’m not a real PhD student right now because I haven’t submitted my application form, but I have begun working on my project.

My research area will be cognitive neuroscience, more specifically focusing on imaging genetics. Basically, I want to look at genetic polymorphisms which may be involved in emotion and attention, and try to map these onto brain regions and more specific behaviours. It should be a lot of fun since I have no background at all in genetics (or any of the sciences outside of psychology).

I will be based at the Queensland Brain Institute within the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland in Brisbane. That is, as soon as they process my forms (the new policy of having no deadlines really defuses any motivation in filling out the dull forms).

The reason I want to do a PhD? I really enjoyed what little research I have been involved so far, and imaging genetics actually interests me.

    • Hi All,

I am Piyush Mundra, PhD student at School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Well, there are so many biologist and I am surprised to see no one from computational biology or Bioinformatics…This is exactly my research area. I am working on microarray gene expression data analysis, more precisely on gene selection and gene network modeling (all data driven based).

I am doing PhD in this particular field because bioinformatics is the truely interdisciplinary area (i m Chemical Engineer and now working in Comp Engg), and I can really learn a lot and enter in many different research fields starting from core biology to finance :-)… and I believe PhD is the basic degree required to build a career in research… it is a licence to do research :)

I would like to interact u people and broaden my knowledge about different fields…

    • Hi All,

Nice to be part of a network where I get to interact with PhD students from all over the world.

I am a graduate student at the Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. My research interests are in the characterization and analysis of targets of immune responses in viruses, and their applications in the area of computer-aided vaccine research. I have developed a novel bioinformatics methodology for systematic screening and selection of targets of immune responses that are candidates for formulation of vaccines against viruses. I have applied the methodology to dengue virus sequence data to screen and select for candidate immunogens that are effective against broad spectrum of the virus and are applicable to a large proportion of the human population. We are, currently, experimentally validating these candidate immunoges with our collaborators from Johns Hopkins University, USA.

I decided to do PhD because I enjoy doing research work, love the whole research process, long to discover new knowledge, and want to contribute to science.

    • Welcome to all new members of the group.. I hope you will find this group useful and enjoy your stay..

      Cheers,

    • Hi
I m sumit deswal, doing phd in immunology at Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology, Freiburg.
Well, though I never read much about immunology before my PhD, but once read some basic concepts, could nt stop myself going into deep in immunology.
I m working on understanding T cell biology and in long term will try to solve some of the basic mystries in immunology e.g memory generation and positive and negative selection.

      sounds interesting………….

      is nt it?

    • Hi,
      I am Asrar Alam.
I am doing PhD at ICGEB, New Delhi, India.
      Working on: Malarial proteases
Why PhD? Interest in science particularly infectious diseases

    • Hello,

I am Saif and I started my PhD in Membrane Protein Structural Biology and Bioenergetics a few days back at the Purdue University (USA).
Why am I doing a PhD ? Well, its because this was the only way for me to find a niche in science where I could study Physics and Physical Chemistry and apply them to Biology. And so far, its been a lot of fun !
