Having landed myself in it, I’d like to invite NN bloggers and anyone else interested to a small unconference on science blogging to be held in Cromer this February, to be called

Cromer Is So Bracing ’09

I’d anticipate that the gathering would be quite small and cosy (maybe 10-12 people) and take place over no more than two or three days. Having a small take-up would make choosing a venue easier than it might be, or even unnecessary … and promote an atmosphere in which we could get sloshed discuss matters of mutual interest in an informal setting. However, do let me know if you’d like to come, and what dates you’d prefer.

Once I have guaged gouged got a feel for how much interest there is likely to be, I shall progress synergise build capacity make further inquiries and come up with something more definite.

Having a decent logo is the most important thing. In that vein I invite Mr G. S. of Glasgow to apply his considerable photoshoppery to this picture

with suitable addition of golden retriever, etc etc. Mrs Gee will vouch for the fact that only minimal alterations are required to turn the jolly chap in the sou’wester into Your Host.

    • @ Graham – please tell the fine technical folks that the script is really to be taken with a sackful of salt. I reckon we can thrash out a semi-improv’ed script in the Saturday (as we learn to knit marine invertebrates), and film it on Sunday. We can use the beach, the Gees’ beach hut, bits of the town and of course the Maison Des Girrafes, with its truly Darwinian profusion of biodiversity. And some books. And nice potted plants for that genuine ‘Amazon Jungle’ effect. It’s just a zany snippet for YouTube we’re after, not the Oscars.

      MORE IMPORTANTLY

I’d like to know from all attending

      • whether you’re actually coming (I have to tell the hotel of numbers)
      • how your accommodation is coming on,
      • how I might help in any way.

I had thought we’d all go out to dinner Friday night but it might simply be easier (and cheaper) to have Fish’n’Chips on the seafront and/or at the Maison Des Girrafes.

I have no accommodation space at the M des Gs except for a sofa if you’re desperate (as slept on by Dr B. Z. of Chapel Hill).

    • I have been mulling over the plot and script for Cromer: Darwin’s Lost Weekend. It seems simplicity and minimising the number of locations we have to film at are key. I propose the minimal plot:

Charles Darwin arrives in Cromer to keynote speak at CISB ’59 (1859 that is) to promote his soon-to-be-published book.

Upon his arrival he discovers that his notebook is missing!

Cue Darwin being obliged to verbally describe the importance of said notebook, field questions from obstinate traditionalists and delight at the enlightened open minds of Gees Minima and Minor.

Then at the end the notebook is re-discovered, either down the back of the sofa, or inexplicably dug up on Cromer beach by Heidi.

I think that this has at most three locations to film at, possibly fewer. We can fill in the first and last scenes using stills and a soundtrack if we don’t have time to film them on Sunday.

    • I’ve taken out some advertising:

    • Nature Network has kindly provided some freebies!!!Q (HT Li-kim Lee)

    • Have fun in Cromer and with the movie!

    • Dr Grump would like to wish everyone multiple fractures (and also wishes very much she could be there). Have a grat time!
