Science Blogging Conference: Full Steam Ahead

Good news all. The Royal Institution in London (where 10 chemical elements were discovered) have offered to host a European science blogging conference later this year, if we organise it.
Whoop!
ScienceBlogs are also onboard for this, so with you guys and their guys we’ll have an impressive gathering.
The first thing to do is pick a date.
To avoid clashes with the RI’s busy events schedule, and to make it easier for non-Londoners to attend, we think a Saturday would be best. The RI is available on these dates.
Aug 16th, 23rd, 30th
Sept 13th
So, what works best for people?

Maybe not 17. I think the mystery might be better than the truth.

Not to make a blind plug for this site, but my colleague did recently via interdepartmental mail and it does look simple and reasonable for scheduling meetings such as what you are proposing.

The answer is 43, Richard.

I’ve worked out some of the answers to Richard’s questions.
6: No, you’d need a potato peeler.
12: Richard III’s cat.
13: It depends on who’s riding the llama.
17: Albert Schweitzer, in that order.
26: Recreational outrage.
44: Accrington Stanley, on penalties.
49: Get someone else to bite them for you.
50: Sparrowhawks, Ma’am.
56: Up his sleevies.Seriously, I think prefixing anything with the word ‘Euro’ is the kiss of death.

Hello Matt, Maxine introduced us on Monday.
I’m looking forward to this conference – sounds excellent. Any date would be fine for me.
However, just for future reference, Saturday isn’t necessarily better for this particular non-Londoner. Perhaps this is just my section of the network but trains tend to take about an hour longer, are less frequent and more expensive…mad, but true…
I’m really glad you’re organising this, though. Thank you!

Hello Clare, nice to see you here. I think part of the reason for a Saturday is that the Royal Institution is more available on Saturdays. Maybe also cheaper ;-)

There, Richard. I told you you didn’t want 17 answered. You’ll have deal with the consequences yourself.
-
3. An eight-foot rabbit covered in jam.
9. Ringo Starr.
34. False. -
5. Tommy Cooper was not in a Bollywood movie
18. Several butcher’s aprons
42. Bo Derek although we’ll accept Clive James -
Right you lot, stop talking amongst yourselves and listen up.
We have a date set.
Saturday 30 August
Naturally, this won’t appeal to everyone – no date will – but it’s the best compromise of blogger feedback and organisational logistics.
Later on, I will start a new forum especially for this conference, where we can plan the structure and content. And, of course, the after-meeting drinks.
