ResearchGATE is a new internet resource for connecting scientists and helping to develop collaborations and share resources and data. They have even promised a biomolecular NMR group!

How does it differ from other science networking sites, eg Nature Network or Friend Feed?

As far as I understand their site will allow data sharing and become a virtual “water-cooler” where scientists can search for potential co-authors, strike up collaborations and perhaps manage joint projects and data online. That is my understanding at least…
Another nice site that is being promoted here in Boston-Cambridge is Epernicus which is now world-wide too. It has a really nice interface and allows users to seach for colleagues with expertise complementary to their own which could help in their research.

There is a recurring theme over at the Friend Feed life scientists’ group (which you are welcome to join!) about there being too many of these social networks for scientists. An example of a discussion there is here, related to a site called BioCrowd.
David Bradley has put together a very useful post collecting all (?) (many, anwyay) of these sites. See Social media for scientits and discussion elsewhere on Nature Network.
I hope these are useful – it seems to me that there are an awful lot of these sites just now. I don’t suppose they will all endure. I tried one called SciLink for a week or two but did not find that it was useful for me.
