For those who are local, I want to direct you over to a nascent group that was spawned from a challenge initiated by Corie Lok, a managing editor of Nature Network, to make nyc the next NN hub. The challenge was issued at Columbia University while she was discussing NN there.
The group can be found here. Hopefully, you will be able to join up with the rest of the nyc science contingency.
I’d say there is a need for a NN here on the West Coast too. Palo Alto is the right place to start in my view. Yes, I know there’s local competition, but is Science planning this sort of thing? Not that I’m aware of … :-)
Steven, I recommend you start gathering the troops, circling the wagons, and recruit for a Palo Alto group. nyc and Berlin have a headstart in the race for the next hub, but who knows…
To be honest I’m not sure where I’d start. Primarily because I do not know what the value proposition is. What, exactly, does an NN give a Nature reader that does not exist in any case? Is it just a tab on the upper right and the means to present local events?
NN hubs are about to change, and when they do they will provide 5 things.
1) A local forum to discuss science in the given city.
2) An events calendar listing local seminars, conferences and cultural events connected to science.
3) Local jobs board.
4) A group blog for the city, written by local scientists (volunteers welcome).
5) Whoever runs the local hub (and we’ll be looking for scientists to do this) can organise local meetups and events if they so wish.
If there’s anything else you’d like to see in a local hub (e.g. a lab equipment exchange is one ideea), please let us know here.
I think this is exactly what is required. You can count on my local support.
