Microsoft Research has just released a new book that aims to draw attention to the potential of bringing together large amounts of data from different repositories to help scientists make discoveries. The book, The Fourth Paradigm is available for free download as a PDF.

Timo Hannay, Publishing Director of nature.com, has contributed a chapter entitled From web 2.0 to the global database (available free as a PDF from the preceding link).

The book builds on the work of Jim Gray, the Turing Award-winning Microsoft researcher who was lost at sea in January 2007.

    • I was reading the Bookseller, a UK trade magazine, last week (probably the week before’s edition, though, because of the local postal strikes in London the post has been arriving very late – one of the Oct issues, anyway), which contains a feature about “the future of the book”. Various luminaries had been invited to write a column each. One of them is Timo Hannay, who wrote a funny interactive detective short-story pastiche. I could not find an online version, I’m afraid.

    • Hey Maxine – if you head over to http://www.thebookseller.com/in-depth/feature/99589-digital-focus-looking-forward.html and scroll nearly to the bottom, the article can be found there.

    • Thanks, Steve! I recommend the article to other readers, as well – it’s very smile-inducing (and short).
