Anyone know anything about EX-CELL 320 Media?

Hey there all you fun people – I’m hoping someone on here is smarter than I am!

I’m doing cell culture and noticed a lot of studies that use the same cell line (HL-1) put the cells in Ex-Cell 320 media before they do experiments with them. We’re having issues (who doesn’t?) so we wanted to try that – but, of course, it’s magically vanished. No one sells Ex-Cell 320, presumably since JRH got taken up by Sigma. Does anyone know if it’s been marketed under another name, or what essential media is closest to it? It was “proprietary” so I can’t even find a formulation, and Sigma’s tech dept. still refuses to answer me. Or, if anyone knows where to buy some from… Anyhow, let me know.

THANKS!

    • Christie,

The “Ex-Cell” brand name was used for JRH’s proprietary serum free media platform which Sigma now owns. Sigma probably found the market for the 320 version too small, but are unlikely to let the formulation out as it could negatively impact the other members of the product family. There are other companies, including ours (sorry for the commercial), who sell media with similar functionality to Ex-Cell 320. The problem is that you would have to test these formulations to find the best for your cell lines which would require some effort. Keep pounding on Sigma, but in the meantime contact Dr. Sharon Papciak (sharon@athenaes.com). She might be able to give you some alternative ideas to try.
