Opening a new front, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal favoured more weightage be given to Class 12 Board exam for IIT entrance and felt that the required minimum of 60 per cent marks could be raised but left it to a Committee to take a decision. “We want to get rid of the coaching centres by giving more weightage to the board exam," Sibal said.

Path towards right direction? Should we implement the same in other state medical and engg colleges? Your thoughts please.

    • I fully agree with the motive to minimize the influence of coaching centers by giving more importance to performance at board exams of 10+2 level.
I think, before we implement such idea, we need to synchronize syllabus and scoring method throughout the country. Currently some higher secondary boards (like central boards) give marks more generously as compared to many state level boards. Some exams are more multiple choice type while many others are still essay type. That also affects scoring ability of students. Unless we standardized the benchmarks, such importance to higher secondary marks will deprive many students while favour some others.

    • I do not think that IIT entrance examination should change too much. The IIT exam is based on ability to think, analyze and perform on the spot. These qualities are necessary for a person to carry the IIT tag. 12th grade board examination scores depend upon cramming books, previous exam papers, refreshers and some luck. Coaching centers are sources of employment for people and should be continued. Instead, there should be regulations that keep a check on these tutoring centers for honest operations. Furthermore, IIT exams should be made computerized to save papers and reduce carbon dioxide. Please ministers, focus on what is important and is the need of people, do not be disconnected. Already enough brain drain has occurred due to poor educational and research policies.

    • In its present form, IIT entrance tests do not check the candidate’s ability to “think, analyze and perform on the spot”. It became more like practice and coaching, just like type-writing or short-hand writing; more your practice better your speed will be. Coaching centers have ruined the whole idea of such tests. Even tests like GREs do not have much meaning in countries like India, China etc.
I passed from IIT-K. I must admit that many of my friends and me, who successfully completed IIT BTech course, cannot complete even 60% of IIT JEE Qs on our own (without extensive coaching).
Now costly coaching are forcing many talented students from less-privileged family background not to do well in such entrance exams. That’s one of the reasons why IIT Btech courses are now overwhelmingly represented by students from higher middle class or upper class family background.
