Congratulations to Prof. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan!
Though he may not have done his Nobel work in an Indian Lab, but still brought lot of pride to all chemists! Cheers to all.

PS: Wish he visits India more frequently now and promotes science.

    • You can read Dr. Ramakrishnan’s profile. Do you think that Indian CHEMISTS should be proud for Dr. Ramakrishnan’s Nobel Prize? His last education in India was B.Sc. in Physics (1971) from Baroda University in Gujarat. He was a physicist till his PhD (Ph.D in Physics from Ohio University in the US).
India, as a country, has NOTHING to do with this Nobel prize. India must not take ANY CREDIT for this Nobel Prize. His work, his grooming as a molecular biologist was accomplished in US.

    • He got this Nobel Prize probably because he has least scientific connection with India. India is great to destroy all probable Nobel Prize winners of future. India should learn why all talented people either migrate abroad to do any meaningful research or get ruined by staying in India.

    • I agree with the posts that India has nothing to do with Nobel Prize. But what’s wrong if India is happy and cheering about it. And even today if Dr. Ramakrishnan makes frequent visit to India he will be able to inspire more kids in India than in US/UK where there are enough Nobel Prize winners. India can surely benefit if a famous name visits campuses of Indian universities.

There is something wrong with many people who frequently visit or write on Nature India Discussion Forum. They are ‘ready and ready and ready’ to think in the regressive direction and at the name of constructive criticism just blame ‘again and again’ that Indian science system in not working. Everyone who is feeling bad about Indian Science scenario and has a potential to bring a good change should visit at least one Young Investigator Meet which is happening once/twice a year to see what kind of new energy India has got to start building new capabilities to conduct quality science in India.

!!!!! THINK POSITIVE AND PERFORM PROGRESSIVELY!!!!!!!!

Yes, we may be worse today but we need to start from now-on and work non-stop for another atleast twenty years to reach at the stage that Indian Science can produce Venkatraman Ramakrishnan from Indian academic institutes.

There is a clear message on “India Poised”, series the one in which Amitabh Bachhan is the messenger that there are two type of India in today’s India. One who is hiding/regressing/not willing to take challenge and THE OTHER ONE who is ready to face the reality and willing to solve problem one by one as it comes in his/her way.

    • Almost every kid dreams, a lot of it. It continues till teen. Then some matures and and some continue dreaming. It’s not bad to dream; In fact it’s the first criteria to make one’s dream successful. If you do not dream, there is no question to make the dream true.
The problem arises when some people continue to dream without having any plan and ability to make that a reality. Their wishful thinking to achieve their dream goal remains a dream simply because they never accept reality and work to go beyond that.
It’s not so distant past that actually an Indian got a Nobel prize in Economics (Amartya Sen). But Indian economic policy makers hardly listen to his advices while many other foreign countries gladly accepted many of his advices.
Many of us, who also want India to progress often forget that-

HOW FAST YOU MAY RUN, YOU WILL NOT REACH YOUR DESTINATION IF YOU RUN TOWARDS A WRONG DIRECTION.

Many people, however, suggested many remedies to improve the quality of Indian science and research. But we all know that almost nothing was implemented. Many of us have decent idea why it is so. India does produce many world class talents in many different fields, including science at junior levels. But we invariably loose almost all of them when they grow up. Our so-called wishful thinkers never bother why we always end up there.

WE LOST THE ABILITY TO CRITICIZE AND ALSO FORGOT WHAT QUALITY MEANS.

Many so-called “positive thinking” people hide under the cover of “future possibilities", as if we will have a great future if we continue our “positive attitude/thinking”, keep on day dreaming and run towards a wrong direction. I just pity, not for those people but of the common people and the country.
It’s the common students of India to decide what they want; day dreaming that India will become a great country one day (without doing what is needed for that) or start becoming logical, critical and then strive towards prosperity.

FALSE PROPAGANDA, INFLATED EGO AND DISTORTED CONCEPT OF PATRIOTISM WILL ONLY HARM US, AS HUMAN BEING AND AS A COUNTRY.

    • I am just posting a letter/blog published in Indian Express today.

Dear Sir: The first Nobel Prize winner was Sri C.V. Raman, second to Dr. Chendrasakhar and third to Sri. Venkatraman. All three are from Tamil Nadu and from a Brahmin Community, which was persecuted in Tamil Nadu by DMK fellows like the way jews were, by Mr. Hitler but in a silent and sure manner. The DMK fellows have wiped out the Brahmins of Tamil Nadu with a political agenda of so called “Inclusive Growth” of Mr. Manmohan Singh the so called Prime-minister of India whose policy of governance is to “Feed the Weed and Kill the Crop” which also means “if God has given you the brain and want you to use it, then get lost and go elsewhere outside the country” because jobs are given in India to those based on who produced them and by whom and not based on what his or her talents and level of intelligence.

    • Will our politicians and so-called intellectuals take a brief break from celebrating the huge success by an Indian origin scientist and think why such people go away from the country, is our country not negatively affected by migration of our talents? Please do not bring the old “brain drain” cliché. It’ll be prudent to say that so-called brain drain at least utilizes the brain than to kill it. It’s high time for India to introspect.

    • Let’s Congratulate Prof. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan for the great job he has done to win the nobel prize. It is indeed an opportunity for the scientific community of India atleast to inspire our young generation and be proud in that there are a lot of talented fellows in our country, but we are not giving motivation or support that they actually needed to grow their talents (“big bosses in science” of our country always killing scientific thoughts).

    • Congratulations to Prof. Venky Ramakrishnan! His work and its recognition only tells us that Science as such is interdisciplinary and universal. There is no need to colour it by caste, creed, race, religion and region/language.
The Nobel prizes are a celebration of science each October, even if every great scientific contribution could not be awarded this recognition.
India does have great institutions. What has changed from the seventies and the eighties is the deterioration of our undergraduate and graduate training, barring the IITs and NITs or a BITS and a few handful of colleges (which repeatedly find mention in the annual IndiaToday survey) there is not much undergraduate education to talk about.
We do hope the new educational reforms and pay revisions will help good teachers to return to the colleges rather than go to the Coaching centres.
We may need to revisit the “how to spot good science and support it” motto, to produce home-grown Nobel-grade scientists.

    • All humans have simian origin. So if India is celebrating that a person of Indian origin got the Nobel, then I guess all monkeys must be going crazy in the Nobel week!

    • I totally disagree with the negativity some of the posters display. One arguement is that we should not rejoice since he did his PhD in USA. So, what about his education till then? Hasn’t India contribute anything? He got all primary and secondary and even graduate degrees from India. India and its vast culture has inspired many talents and they have excelled in their respective fields wherever they go. So, it is within the legitimate right to rejoice this occasion since Venkataraman has been educated in India till his graduation.
The big question is Is Nobel prize the end? Is that the ultimatum? sadly, it is not. There are so many big contributions that are not recognized by this prize.
Pause for a minute, and think about Mahatma Gandhi. He was nominated several times, but was not awarded the prize. Why? If a terrorist like Arafat is awarded the Nobel prize, I am sure that Gandhi does not fit for this award.
