Their is interesting article on contribution of Indians in research See Thomson Reuters announces Indian global research excellence awards . Do you think citation is good criteria for evaluating research of individual/nation.

Well this is really a pleasant surprise when some one like Dr Raghava raise this kind of question who is considered as accomplished scientist. Indeed individual citations can be a good metric of successful scientific career but it does not reflect if that success really correlates with scientific contribution of certain individual.

Thanks for wishes. My idea was to initiate debate on citations and performance. Unfortunately, we have not got much response. Its important for our colleagues to understand the measures used to evaluate the performance, one of the important measure commonly used to evaluate performance is citations. Most of indexes are based on citations like h-index, impact factor of journals, g-index, citation/per paper, total citation. At present their is on single parameter which is acceptable to whole scientific community. Thus it is important to understand pros and cons of commonly used parameters. I will apprecaite if other colleagues also write their views on this topic. For detail on citations click here

Raghava
