Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Job Opportuntity in Indian Academia and Research Institutions

Hello everybody,

This is my first post in this network and I’m happy to note that the discussion forum is very active.

My posting is to inquire about job opportunity for someone like me who intends to return to India. I’m a PhD scientist working as faculty in USA.

My research interests are in the application of proteomics and mass spectrometry. My PhD and postdoctoral work has provided me with the opportunity to work extensively with the application and maintenance of mass spectrometers. I have worked with different types of MS instruments – low and high resolution – ion-traps, triplequads, QTOF, QSTAR, LTQ-Orbitrap with ESI, MALDI etc. I have used them for mass spectrometry based proteomics, glycomics as well as small molecule analysis. I have also had the distinction of organizing and co-chairing an oral presentation session in an international conference in USA. An ideal job opportunity in India would be in a proteomics and mass spectrometry core facility. That bring me to my question about India:

How many institutes in India have a specialized mass spectrometry core facility? How do I go about finding them.

My strategy was to check websites of research institutions and try searing on google. I tried the internet and found very few websites listing their mass spectrometers in their facilities! I found that CCMB, Hyd has a full fledged proteomics platform.

How is recruitment done. Is it strictly through recruitment ads. Are stray applications accepted. How much nepotism is present. Is calling them directly a better option and is it encouraged.

Is there any strict age limit for recruitment?

Another question is whether Indian institutes afford to acquire and maintain these high-end proteomics instruments. Is cost an issue in not having these core facilities. Who funds them – is it mainly from Govt of India.

Thanking you folks in advance,

Rajesh

    • Dear Dr.Rajesh,

Please contact Dr. Shantanu Sengupta at IGIB in Delhi. They are looking for a Mass spec scientist urgently. You can look up www.igib.res.in (Institute of Genomic and Integrative Biology Delhi).

We sell the Bruker Mass spec systems in India and Sourabh was our colleague for a long time. Mass Market in India is exploding

      Good Luck.

      S.Kumar.

    • Just like medical practitioners, Indian research is also increasingly guided by business houses who sale scientific products and services in India.

    • S. Kumar – Thanks for the tip. I’m in touch with Dr. Sengupta. Can you please provide me with your contact info?

Many other posters have provided their opinion and I thank them. Some have tried to dissuade me and I do understand that it is based on their bitter experiences. I have had my share while doing bachelor’s and master’s in India. The main reason why many NRI researchers want to return to India (including me) is because of education of children. At some point of time, this takes precedence! Thank you all again.

    • I understand what you mean. Many NRI researchers do site “education” (and “culture” foe some)of their kids as the main reason for them to going back to India. I will suggest you to go through the post I wrote sometime ago- “Is India a better place to bring up kids?”. I hope it might help parents like you.

    • Dr. Chatterjee,

I was actually going through your blog while you were posting the reply here. It is an interesting one and you have valid points. When I say return to India, all this was taken in to account. I have not stated one more reason for the return: Parents and Parents-in-law.

Anyway – the USA you are talking about still exists, but it is about a generation old now. A large number of academicians in USA are naturalized citizens. I do not want to go into it any further and it also off-topic.

    • Hello Dr. Nagpal,

Please let me know if there is interest in Used LCMS systems in India, if there are any one interested we can supply

      Thanks
      David

    • Dear Rajesh,
Please do your homework very well. Apart from CCMB, Hyderabad and IISc Bangalore which really has a very good proteomics facility and IGIB which is palnning on starting one, very few institutes actually have any idea as to what mass spectrometry really is and about its potential and application. Most institutes these days will have a MALDI-ToF but also most of them will not have anyone to run it or maintain it! Also , please stay away from private research institutes (i.e non CSIR/DBT/ICMR/DST) institutes no matter what. They have very lucarative pay packages and that’s pretty much all. They typically do not live up to the rosy promises they make and have no clue how research is to be managed or funded.
While I don’t want to scare you, I am one of the unfortunate persons who returned to India last year with my family from US and took up a job with a private institute here (which promised me stuff which would make IISc and NII envious), I am at present desperately looking for a position in US to go back and salvage what ever is left of my career.
      Good Luck,
