The molecular nature of gene expression and regulation in the eukaryotic cell is a fascinating and complex field of biology. It includes topics as diverse as transcription and translation, as well as RNAi, splicing and epigenetic modification.
RNA molecules play a key role in all levels of gene expression and regulation. Messenger RNAs are responsible for carrying genetic information which will be translated into protein by RNA based ribozymes, and micro RNAs are responsible for targeting and destroying specific transcripts. Indeed, RNA is thought to be the first biological molecule which evolved, eventually giving rise to the entire biodiversity we see today.
