This is an interesting new idea from the Wellcome Trust. I think the exhibitions and events at the Wellcome Collection on Euston Road do a great job of bringing together art and science (Andrea Duncan’s Twenty-three Pairs, in which chromosomes are shown as socks, is one of my favourites). It great that the Trust is branching out into literature as well.
The Wellcome Trust press release says that Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’, Jean-Dominique Bauby’s ‘The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’ and Ian McEwan’s ‘Saturday’ would all be candidates for the new literature prize, which highlights how broad the remit is. There is also a website for the prize, which lists more examples of medicine in literature.
